CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Jefferson High School Cheer Team made school history at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center over the weekend when they became the AAA Runner Up in the he WVSSAC Class AAA Cheer Competition.
Head Cheer Coach Destyne Peck said it was an amazing achievement, but that seeing their faces when they heard their name announced melted her heart.
“Every team overcomes injuries and illness, but man oh man these kids are fighters,” Peck said. “They believed so they achieved! It felt like first place to us!”
Peck said the season didn’t start off the way they wanted.
The team didn’t win the EPAC (Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference) or regionals this year, but Peck credits her Assistant Coach, Colleen Snyder, with keeping everyone’s spirits high.
“Without her I’d be lost,” she said. “This season at first didn’t start out in our favor, but we ended with a huge victory. We’ve always told our athletes if you work hard, it will pay off and it finally did!”
The Cougars came in behind Wheeling Park.
Other Class AAA competitors included Spring Valley, Woodrow Wilson, George Washington, Brooke, Hurricane and Martinsburg.
